WINE REGION
San José
Country Uruguay

San José is a small wine-growing region situated in the south-western part of Uruguay, west of the capital Montevideo. The region is famous for its fine white wines made from international wine grape varieties including Pinot Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and of course the icon red grape of the country Tannat. Other significant planted grape varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. The climate of the region is moderate Atlantic which has hot summer and cold winter influenced by the cooling breezes during summer and humidity during winter. The topography is mostly flat land with small rolling hills, and the soil types are predominantly granite and schist-based, which are quite poor, and stimulates the vine to go deeper in the search for nourishment. Although the San José wine region is not very popular it has tremendous potential, and it will be sooner or later on the international wine radar, due to its high-quality winemaking.
